Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak, has introduced new climbing regulations following a deadly season in 2023. The Nepalese government has mandated stricter health checks, requiring all climbers to provide proof of high-altitude experience and comprehensive insurance. Additionally, the use of supplemental oxygen will be more closely monitored to prevent overcrowding and unsafe summit attempts.
Environmental concerns have also prompted new waste management rules. Climbers must now carry back all non-biodegradable waste or face hefty fines. Clean-up expeditions have removed tons of trash left behind by previous expeditions, including oxygen tanks and camping gear.
Despite these measures, debates continue over whether Everest should enforce a complete cap on permits. Local guides argue that climbing tourism is a vital economic driver, while conservationists warn of irreversible damage to the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
