Lake Compounce: America’s Oldest Theme Park Continues to Thrill Nearly 200 Years After Opening

by Evelyn

As summer approaches and families prepare for seasonal outings to beaches, festivals, and amusement parks, one historic attraction in Connecticut is preparing to welcome visitors for yet another year. Lake Compounce, located in Bristol, holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating theme park in the United States, first opening its gates in 1846.

A Legacy Nearly Two Centuries in the Making

The origins of Lake Compounce date back to October 6, 1846, when scientist Samuel Botsford conducted public electric experiments on the grounds. Seeking to protect the area, local property owner Gad Norton developed the site into a recreational space by constructing walking paths, placing picnic tables, and building a gazebo, transforming the land into a public picnic park.

The park flourished throughout the late 19th century, with notable expansions including a full-service restaurant in 1895. The introduction of amusement rides began with a carousel in 1911, followed by its first rollercoaster, the Green Dragon, in 1914. The Green Dragon was eventually replaced in 1927 by the Wildcat, which remains operational to this day.

Over the ensuing decades, Lake Compounce solidified its status as a full-fledged amusement park. Additions included steamboat rides, a miniature steam railroad, an 18-hole golf course, and concerts by notable performers — including a young Frank Sinatra.

Despite financial difficulties in the 1980s, the park has never ceased operations. Revitalization efforts under new ownership in 1996 and again in 2009 brought renewed growth. Today, Lake Compounce features over 45 rides and is home to Crocodile Cove, the largest water park in Connecticut.
