HOUGHTON, Mich. — Two unidentified individuals were discovered deceased at a backcountry campground in Isle Royale National Park, according to a statement released by the National Park Service on Tuesday.
Park officials received reports around 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 8, alerting them to the presence of two bodies at the remote site.
In response, two park rangers embarked on an overnight hike, covering approximately 11 miles to reach the location by Monday morning. Upon arrival, they confirmed the deaths.
The causes of death have not yet been determined, and the incident remains under investigation. Additional personnel and aviation resources were deployed to assist with the response on Monday.
Isle Royale National Park comprises the main island and roughly 400 surrounding islets, situated about 15 miles from the Ontario shoreline. The park is accessible only by ferry, floatplane, or private boat.
