Hungary’s Historic Amusement Park Marks Growth and Tradition Ahead of Summer Season

by Evelyn

Hungary’s only traditional amusement park, now operating under the name Nagyerdei Cultural Park, is preparing to open its summer season with a blend of nostalgia and modern attractions. Originally inaugurated as Lúdas Matyi on May 1, 1960, the park has since merged with the adjacent zoo to form a unique cultural and recreational complex.

According to director Gergely Sándor Nagy, the institution has been a full member of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) since 2015. Its dual amusement-zoological profile is rare even at a continental level, with only ten similar facilities currently active across Europe.

Among the park’s 24 attractions, several have remained since its inception. Notably, the carousel—featuring ornately carved horses crafted in Vienna in the late 19th century—continues to operate in its original form thanks to meticulous upkeep. Another historical feature includes one of Europe’s oldest bumper car tracks, now updated with modern LED lighting while retaining its vintage charm.

A miniature amusement train, which once served in transporting construction materials during the park’s development, remains a popular draw among visitors.

The park has experienced a significant resurgence in recent years. Visitor numbers have quadrupled over the past decade, with a 40 percent increase recorded in just the last three years.

To mark the opening of the 2025 season on June 14, the park will host a special evening event, keeping attractions open until 10 p.m. The nighttime festivities will include music and colorful lighting displays, creating a festive atmosphere aimed especially at students beginning their summer holidays.

In celebration of Father’s Day, the park will also offer free admission and ride vouchers to all fathers and grandfathers. The initiative, according to Nagy, seeks to promote experience-based recreation while strengthening multigenerational family bonds.

“This gesture aims to support experience-based recreation and to strengthen the family bonds that span generations, highlighting the special connection between a father and child, or a grandfather and grandchild,” said Nagy.

As it enters a new season, Nagyerdei Cultural Park continues to blend historical charm with contemporary appeal, solidifying its role as a treasured destination in Hungary’s cultural and leisure landscape.
