As uncertainty looms over the future of U.S. public lands—amid federal staffing shortages and concerns about potential privatization—artists and scientists participating in the Grand Canyon Conservancy’s residency program are lending their voices to underscore the enduring value of these shared spaces.
A new blog series by the Grand Canyon Conservancy captures the reflections of recent residents, ranging from writers to planetary geologists, who emphasize that public lands like Grand Canyon National Park are more than scenic landmarks. They are living archives, spiritual touchstones, and platforms for inquiry—what one contributor calls a “time observatory.”
Unearthing the Past to Protect the Future
Author Amy Monaghan explored the park’s rich historical landscape through the lens of the Kolb brothers, pioneering photographers whose historic studio still stands along the canyon rim. Her archival research and onsite work coincided with an unexpected event: a near-total park shutdown in August 2024 due to repeated failures in the Transcanyon Waterline. The disruption offered a rare and unsettling glimpse into what the future could hold if infrastructure and conservation efforts are not maintained.
“Public lands are not passive paper backdrops,” Monaghan wrote. “They are places of inquiry. Places of memory. A living record of who we are and who we have been.” Her post called for greater advocacy to ensure that future generations retain the ability to engage with such historical and emotional landscapes.
Cosmic Perspective, Earthly Connection
For planetary geologist Adeene Denton, the Grand Canyon served as both classroom and observatory. During her residency, she engaged visitors in conversations about ocean worlds beyond Earth, using the canyon’s unique vantage points and night skies to ignite scientific curiosity and existential reflection.
“Amid times that feel increasingly unstable, it’s more important than ever for people to have the time and ability to look out at the canyon and wonder, and look up at the stars and hope,” Denton wrote. She emphasized that national parks play a critical role in inspiring wonder and curiosity—experiences that she argues are foundational to understanding and valuing the natural world.
A Measure of Time and Awe
Photographic artist duo Julie Anand and Damon Sauer focused their residency on documenting visitor reactions to the overwhelming scale and beauty of the Grand Canyon. Their work captured moments of awe, silence, and attempts to articulate the seemingly inexpressible.
“I would argue that there are few circumstances as persuasive as this public land’s majesty to situate a human heart within a proper sense of our home planet’s scale, in time and in space,” Anand noted.
