Tight Security at Golden Temple Ahead of Operation Bluestar Anniversary Amid Leadership Controversy

by Evelyn

In anticipation of the 41st anniversary of Operation Bluestar, comprehensive security measures have been implemented at the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar by both the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and local law enforcement. The move comes amid heightened sensitivities surrounding the annual observance and internal opposition over religious leadership.

Operation Bluestar, carried out by the Indian Army in June 1984 to remove militants from the Golden Temple, remains one of the most emotionally charged events in Sikh history. Authorities are working to ensure that commemorations proceed peacefully.

According to sources, intelligence inputs are being closely monitored to preempt any clandestine activity. A significant number of plainclothes police personnel are being stationed inside the temple complex. Police officials have also engaged in consultations with various Sikh groups, particularly those who have voiced opposition to Akal Takht officiating jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj addressing the community during the anniversary event on June 6.

Golden Temple manager Bhagwant Singh Dhangera confirmed that all necessary security protocols have been enacted throughout the complex. He urged the sangat (devotees) to cooperate with the SGPC in maintaining decorum and peace during the solemn occasion.

Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar stated that enhanced security and law and order protocols have been in effect for the past two days in preparation for the event.

Meanwhile, the SGPC commenced an akhand path (uninterrupted recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib) at the Akal Takht, which will culminate on June 6 with the bhog ceremony. SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami, who was present at the initiation of the path, reiterated that the events of June 1984 had left indelible scars on the Sikh community. “The brutality inflicted by the government of the time can never be forgotten,” Dhami said.

Opposition to Gargaj’s Role

In a parallel development, multiple Nihang Singh organisations have collectively rejected Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj’s authority to address the Sikh community on “Ghallughara Diwas,” arguing that his appointment as jathedar was not in accordance with traditional Panthic norms.

Jathedar Baba Balbir Singh, chief of Shiromani Panth Akali Budha Dal, asserted that Gargaj lacks the Panthic legitimacy required to issue directives or messages on such a significant occasion. He called for restraint and unity to avoid confrontation on June 6, urging the SGPC to reconsider decisions that run counter to Sikh sentiments.

Gargaj Responds to Objections

Responding to the opposition, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj downplayed the concerns, stating, “Nothing will happen.” He expressed confidence that this year’s observance would be “even more peaceful than previous years.”

Acknowledging the differences within the community, Gargaj maintained that such divisions dissolve within the spiritual sanctity of the Gurughar (House of the Guru). He also emphasised shared bonds with leaders of organisations opposing his address, including Damdami Taksal, whose former head Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was killed during Operation Bluestar and is revered by many as a martyr.

The atmosphere in Amritsar remains vigilant but calm as the anniversary approaches, with authorities hopeful for a peaceful and respectful observance of a day that continues to carry profound historical and emotional weight.
