Six Flags America, the iconic amusement park located in Bowie, Maryland, will close its doors permanently on November 2, bringing an end to more than 50 years of entertainment in the region. This closure marks a significant shift in the area’s identity as an entertainment hub. The nearly 500-acre property, which includes both the amusement park and the Hurricane Harbor water park, is slated to be sold for redevelopment.
The decision to close the park was made after a comprehensive review of the company’s portfolio. Six Flags CEO Richard Zimmerman stated that the Maryland location no longer aligns with the company’s long-term growth strategy. “As part of our review, we have determined that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plan,” Zimmerman said in a company announcement.
The closure follows a thorough evaluation of various options, with Zimmerman noting that selling the property for redevelopment was expected to provide the highest return on investment. Despite the closure, Six Flags assured that it would not significantly impact the company’s financial outlook for the year.
Originally opened in 1974 as a wildlife preserve, the park was rebranded as Six Flags America in 1999. Over the years, it has become a staple for families and thrill-seekers in the region. The closure comes at a time when the area is undergoing significant changes, including the impending relocation of the NFL’s Washington Commanders from their long-time home in Landover, Maryland, to Washington, D.C., just a few miles away from the park.
Prince George’s County’s Acting Executive Tara Jackson expressed a commitment to working with Six Flags and other stakeholders to ensure that the redevelopment process benefits the community. “We are committed to working closely with Six Flags and other stakeholders to guide a thoughtful and inclusive redevelopment process that supports jobs, growth, and long-term community benefit,” Jackson told WTOP.
The final day of operations for both Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor will be November 2. Season pass holders and ticket holders will be able to use their passes until the end of the season. Currently, the park employs approximately 70 full-time staff members. Six Flags has pledged to support these employees through the closure process.
Following the closure of the Bowie location, Six Flags will continue to operate 40 parks and resorts across North America.
