SHANGHAI — Shanghai Disney Resort has officially broken ground on a new Spider-Man-themed land, marking a significant expansion that underscores growing global investment in China’s flourishing theme park industry.
Positioned next to the recently opened Zootopia area, the upcoming land will introduce the park’s first major Marvel-themed attraction—a high-energy thrill coaster centered around Spider-Man, one of Marvel’s most iconic superheroes, according to an announcement from the resort.
With more than 14 million visitors annually, Shanghai Disney Resort continues to grow its footprint. The new Spider-Man area will become the ninth themed land within Shanghai Disneyland and the third major expansion since the park’s grand opening in 2016. Previous expansions include Disney·Pixar Toy Story Land in April 2018 and Zootopia in December 2023.
The resort stated that the new land will immerse guests in a Marvel universe-inspired environment, offering themed shopping, dining, and entertainment that extend the Spider-Man narrative.
Additionally, construction is underway on a third Disney-themed hotel, further boosting the resort’s capacity and offerings.
The expansion news was shared on Monday to coincide with China Tourism Day, highlighting the country’s growing emphasis on cultural and tourism development.
China’s theme park sector has emerged as a focal point for international investment, driven by a vast population, increasing disposable income, and the fusion of cultural and tourism experiences. The success of Shanghai Disney Resort and Universal Beijing Resort has spurred interest from global brands seeking to tap into China’s expanding market for immersive, family-oriented entertainment.
Among upcoming projects, LEGOLAND Shanghai Resort—the world’s largest LEGOLAND—is set to open on July 5. Meanwhile, Warner Bros is collaborating with Jin Jiang International Holdings Co., Ltd. to establish a “Making of Harry Potter” studio tour at Shanghai Jinjiang Action Park. Plans are also in place for an outdoor Peppa Pig theme park.
According to China’s 2025 Government Work Report, the country aims to fast-track major investment projects, cultivate new cultural business models, and aggressively expand its tourism industry.
