Lake Compounce: America’s Oldest Amusement Park Prepares for Summer Season

by Evelyn

As summer approaches and outdoor attractions reopen for the season, one historic destination in Connecticut is gearing up to welcome visitors once again. Lake Compounce, located in Bristol, is not only the oldest theme park in the state but also holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating amusement park in the United States.

A Nearly Two-Century Legacy

Lake Compounce first opened its gates on October 6, 1846. The site’s transformation into a public attraction began when scientist Samuel Botsford conducted electric experiments before a gathered crowd. Concerned about preserving the area, property owner Gad Norton laid down a path around the lake, added picnic tables, and built a gazebo. This marked the beginning of what would become a historic American amusement park.

Initially a popular picnic destination, the park expanded in 1895 with the addition of a restaurant offering full-course meals. In 1911, Lake Compounce introduced its first ride, a carousel, followed by its inaugural roller coaster, the Green Dragon, in 1914. The Wildcat, a wooden roller coaster that remains operational today, replaced the Green Dragon in 1927.

Throughout the 20th century, Lake Compounce grew into a full-fledged amusement park, featuring attractions such as steamboats, a miniature steam railway, an 18-hole golf course, and musical performances, including an early-career concert by Frank Sinatra.

Despite financial struggles in the 1980s, the park never ceased operations. Its revival came under new ownership in 1996 and again in 2009. Today, Lake Compounce is a major regional attraction, boasting over 45 rides and housing Connecticut’s largest water park, Crocodile Cove.
