LAREDO, Texas – A dried-up pond and the discovery of a dead fish at North Central Park prompted a rapid response from Laredo city officials following public concern raised over Memorial Day weekend.
Local resident Liz Pena encountered the dried pond while walking the park trails and shared photos of the scene on social media. The images quickly garnered attention, drawing a response from District 6 Councilmember Dr. Tyler King.
According to King, the pond has experienced recurring issues due to beaver dams obstructing water flow. Typically, city crews maintain the area every two to three days. However, due to reduced staffing during the holiday weekend, maintenance was delayed, leading to the pond’s temporary drying.
City officials responded to the situation promptly, with plans to address the beaver-related blockage and restore the pond. Pena expressed appreciation for the city’s action, emphasizing the park’s importance to the community and the need for consistent upkeep to prevent future occurrences.
“This is a park that people want to come see and enjoy,” Pena stated in her social media post. “It was very heartbreaking, and I’m glad that they’re doing something quickly.”
Councilmember King also confirmed that the city is in communication with Texas Parks and Wildlife regarding possible relocation of the beavers if their presence continues to disrupt water flow. Once water levels are restored, officials plan to restock the pond with fish.
The city’s swift response highlights ongoing efforts to maintain public spaces and respond to community concerns.
