The New Taipei City Art Museum (NTCAM) officially opened its doors on April 25 in the city’s Yingge District, marking the launch of the region’s first public contemporary art institution.
Positioned as a cultural hub for all, the NTCAM aims to foster community engagement and amplify diverse artistic voices. The museum seeks to achieve this through artist residencies and international collaborations. To celebrate its grand opening, NTCAM is hosting four inaugural exhibitions: NTCAM Collection: Encounters in Reflection, Reimagining Radical Cities, The Ongoing Nature, and Xindian Boys: Don’t Worry, Baby.
The opening ceremony was attended by New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih, alongside the museum’s five-member international advisory committee. The committee includes Aric Chen, director of the Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam; Clara Kim, chief curator and director of curatorial affairs at the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles; Patrick Flores, deputy director of curatorial and research at the National Gallery Singapore; Mami Kataoka, director of Tokyo’s Mori Art Museum; and independent curator Hou Hanru.
During her speech, NTCAM director Lai Hsiang-ling emphasized the institution’s mission, stating, “The museum’s inauguration marks our commitment to bridge art and society. We look forward to collaborating with you all to cultivate this new civic museum as a hub for collective learning, shared experiences, and empathetic connections, establishing a dynamic platform for intellectual exchange.”
The opening of NTCAM represents a significant cultural milestone for the region, with plans to become a vital space for both local and international artistic dialogue.
