BUFFALO, Wyo. — Crazy Woman Canyon Road, officially designated as Forest System Road 33, will remain closed to recreational traffic throughout the summer due to a bridge replacement project, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
The scenic route, which winds through the Bighorn Mountains, typically serves as an alternative to U.S. Highway 16 for travelers seeking a more tranquil passage between Buffalo and Ten Sleep. However, with construction underway, Highway 16—part of the Cloud Peak Scenic Byway—will serve as the sole major east-west corridor across the mountain range.
The Bighorn National Forest reported on its Facebook page that the bridge replacement project is expected to continue through September. Under normal conditions, Crazy Woman Canyon Road reopens annually on June 20 following a seasonal closure.
“This bridge replacement project is being done in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration and Johnson County,” the Forest Service said in a statement. “As part of this project, Johnson County is also replacing a bridge off-forest along the same route. The work is necessary to make improvements to critical infrastructure and is essential in maintaining public access.”
