A new interactive exhibit inspired by the PBS KIDS series Alma’s Way has opened at the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum and will run through August 30. Designed for young visitors, the immersive experience is the result of a collaboration between The Magic House, St. Louis Children’s Museum, and Fred Rogers Productions.
The exhibit brings to life the vibrant Bronx neighborhood of Alma Rivera, a confident 6-year-old Puerto Rican girl known for her thoughtful problem-solving and cultural pride. It features hands-on activities that reflect the spirit of Alma’s community and heritage.
Key attractions include:
- Alma’s Family Duplex: A home setting that introduces visitors to Puerto Rican traditions, such as making mofongo and playing traditional instruments like maracas.
- Bodega: A neighborhood market where children can explore culturally diverse items and contribute to a collaborative community mural.
- Community Center: An area where families can engage in Puerto Rican cultural expressions, including Bomba dance lessons and playing Bomba drums.
- Pet Clinic: A veterinarian station inspired by Alma’s father, Dr. Rivera, where children can conduct animal check-ups and record their own animal show videos.
- 6 Train: A replica of the New York City subway, where visitors can play The Alma Train game and take on the role of conductor.
- Park: A nature-themed zone that includes a quest for coquí frogs, rock climbing features, games like checkers, and a clubhouse craft area.
Located in downtown Grand Rapids, the museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $12 per person.
