PUTNEY, Vt. – As temperatures rise and summer approaches, families across New England are preparing for outdoor adventures—from beaches to festivals and amusement parks. Among these seasonal staples is Santa’s Land USA, Vermont’s only theme park, which offers a unique twist on summer fun with year-round holiday cheer.
Founded in 1957 by Jack Poppele, a New York City radio pioneer, Santa’s Land USA was inspired by Poppele’s vision of a Christmas-themed roadside attraction after spending time in Vermont. Located in Putney, the park opened its doors to the public on August 10, 1957, featuring whimsical attractions such as Santa’s Sweetheart Bridge and quickly becoming a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
For decades, the park flourished as a nostalgic escape celebrating “Christmas in July.” However, in 2014, the park succumbed to years of neglect and was forced to close. It remained shuttered until 2017, when it was revived by David Haversat, a longtime admirer who had dreamed of restoring the beloved attraction since childhood.
Haversat undertook extensive renovations to preserve the park’s original 1950s charm, restoring much of its architecture and decor. Since reopening, Santa’s Land has reclaimed its status as a cherished family tradition in New England. Visitors today can enjoy classic rides like an antique car track and a carousel, along with mini-golf, festive Christmas displays, and visits with Santa and his elves.
As one of the last remaining roadside attractions in the region, Santa’s Land USA stands as a testament to enduring Americana and seasonal joy.
