NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Long Wharf Pier, a historic waterfront landmark in New Haven, has been officially added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its longstanding role in the city’s maritime and commercial heritage.
Once a bustling hub for seafaring trade, the pier played a critical part in shaping New Haven’s economic development. Its new status affirms its historical importance and ensures it is considered “worthy of preservation.”
A statement from the city emphasized the significance of the designation, highlighting New Haven’s commitment to honoring the harbor’s historical and economic contributions, while also focusing on the continued revitalization of the waterfront area.
To mark the occasion, a ceremony was held Tuesday at 3 p.m., attended by New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker and state preservation officials.
The addition of Long Wharf Pier to the national register places it among the country’s protected historic sites, securing its legacy for future generations.
