Six Flags Great America Unveils Record-Breaking Dive Coaster, Wrath of Rakshasa

by Evelyn

GURNEE, Ill. — Six Flags Great America is set to debut a new thrill ride that redefines the limits of dive coasters. Wrath of Rakshasa, the world’s steepest and most inverted dive coaster, will open to the public on May 31.

Manufactured by renowned coaster designer Bolliger & Mabillard, Wrath of Rakshasa features a dramatic 171-foot drop at a staggering 96-degree angle—currently the steepest of its kind globally. Riders experience a momentary cliffhanger pause before the descent, enhancing the intensity of the drop.

The coaster includes five inversions, the highest number on any dive coaster in operation. Towering at 180 feet and reaching speeds approaching 67 miles per hour, Wrath of Rakshasa spans 3,239 feet of track, delivering a high-speed, inversion-packed experience.

Six Flags Great America park president John Krajnak emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation when the ride was first announced. “Six Flags Great America continues to push the limits of innovation and thrills, as we introduce the world’s steepest drop with the most inversions on a dive coaster,” Krajnak said. “Wrath of Rakshasa joins our already impressive lineup of record-breaking roller coasters and attractions at the park, demonstrating our commitment to delivering cutting-edge experiences for our guests.”

The debut of the new ride comes amid significant organizational changes at Six Flags Entertainment. The company recently announced the elimination of all park president positions across its 27 amusement parks, accompanied by a 10 percent reduction in full-time staff. The restructuring follows the 2023 merger between Six Flags and Cedar Fair, creating the largest amusement park operator in North America.

Wrath of Rakshasa is expected to draw thrill-seekers from across the country, reinforcing Six Flags Great America’s reputation as a destination for record-breaking attractions.
