Lake Compounce: America’s Oldest Theme Park Prepares for Summer Season in Connecticut

by Evelyn

As temperatures rise and summer approaches, many popular outdoor attractions across Connecticut are gearing up for the season — from beaches and festivals to amusement parks. Among them stands a historic gem: Lake Compounce, the oldest operating theme park in the United States.

Located in Bristol, Connecticut, Lake Compounce first opened its gates in 1846, making it nearly two centuries old. The park holds a unique distinction in American history, blending traditional amusement park thrills with a deep-rooted past.

A Legacy That Began in the 19th Century

Lake Compounce was established on October 6, 1846, when scientist Samuel Botsford conducted public electrical experiments on the property. Following the demonstration, landowner Gad Norton sought to preserve the space, creating a recreational area with a walking path, picnic tables, and a gazebo. What began as a public picnic park quickly grew in popularity.

By 1895, the park featured a full-service restaurant, and in 1911, it introduced its first amusement ride — a carousel that opened on Memorial Day. Three years later, Lake Compounce debuted its first roller coaster, the Green Dragon, which was eventually replaced in 1927 by the Wildcat, a wooden coaster that remains in operation today.

Throughout the early and mid-20th century, the park expanded its attractions, adding steamboat rides, a miniature steam railroad, an 18-hole golf course, and live musical performances — including a concert by a young Frank Sinatra.

Despite facing financial difficulties in the 1980s, Lake Compounce has never closed since its inception. The park saw a revival under new ownership in 1996 and again in 2009. Today, it has evolved into one of the largest amusement parks in New England, featuring over 45 rides and Crocodile Cove, the state’s largest water park.

Visiting Lake Compounce This Summer

Lake Compounce currently operates Thursday through Sunday, with daily hours set to resume in mid-June for the summer season. Crocodile Cove, the park’s water attraction, opens for the season on Saturday, May 24, and will remain open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. through September 7.

Admission prices typically begin at $65.99 for daily tickets. However, a Memorial Day promotion is offering online tickets starting at $34.99 and season passes beginning at $54.99.

Lake Compounce is located at 185 Enterprise Drive in Bristol, Connecticut.
