Historic ISKCON Temple Reopens After Landmark Restoration at Original 26 2nd Avenue Site

New York City — A vital chapter of spiritual history was brought back to life this week as the first temple of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), located at 26 2nd Avenue in Manhattan’s Bowery, officially reopened following a meticulous restoration. Known as “Matchless Gifts,” the modest storefront served as the movement’s birthplace, where founder Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada began chanting sessions and established ISKCON in 1966.

The grand reopening marked the culmination of a restoration project more than a decade in the making. Initially envisioned by Radhanath Swami, the effort sought to return the temple to its 1966 condition and transform it into a living museum. Research-intensive work involved detailed interviews with Prabhupada’s earliest followers, as well as the recovery of rare memorabilia and personal items belonging to the spiritual leader.

Restorers preserved every element of the original temple’s aesthetic, from artwork and signage to ceilings, walls, and floors. Yadunath Das, a key member of the restoration team and emcee of the event, credited archival footage, photographs, and books for enabling the faithful recreation of the space’s original character.

The reopening festivities began with traditional sidewalk kirtan—devotional singing and chanting that once drew crowds during ISKCON’s earliest days. Inside, a full house of devotees and well-wishers participated in a three-hour ceremony that included heartfelt recollections from Prabhupada’s early disciples. Attendees overflowed onto the street, recalling the temple’s original vibrant gatherings.

Among the speakers was Rukmini Devi Dasi, one of ISKCON’s senior members, who shared personal memories from the foundational period. Hansarupa, President of the Brooklyn Temple, presented Srila Prabhupada’s original rubber shoes, now gold-leafed. Devotees were invited to touch the shoes to their heads as a gesture of reverence.

Expressing gratitude during the ceremony, Radhanath Swami said, “I am sincerely grateful to all these wonderful devotees who dedicated so much of their hearts and their lives to give us this opportunity to experience Srila Prabhupada in this very intimate and historic way at 26 2nd Avenue.”

While the restoration has reached a major milestone, additional financial support is needed to complete the project. Contributions can be made via a GoFundMe campaign. A livestream of the grand reopening is also available for public viewing.

The reopening of the Matchless Gifts temple not only honors ISKCON’s roots but also provides a meaningful space for reflection and inspiration for generations to come.
