Burlington Art Gallery Unveils Proposal for $116M Expansion on Existing Lakeshore Site

by Evelyn

The Art Gallery of Burlington (AGB) has released a bold vision for the future of its downtown facility, proposing a significantly larger building to replace its current location at 1333 Lakeshore Road.

During a presentation to Burlington’s committee of the whole on June 9, AGB Executive Director Emma Sankey outlined the findings of a facility master plan and future needs study. The plan recommends a new, three-storey, 77,000-square-foot building, which would replace the existing two-storey, 48,000-square-foot structure.

The proposed redevelopment aims to address growing space needs and modernize the gallery’s infrastructure to better serve the community, enhance visitor experience, and accommodate expanded programming.

The projected cost of the new building is estimated at $116 million. While the gallery remains at an early planning stage, the proposal marks a significant step toward reimagining the cultural hub’s role in Burlington’s downtown core.

City officials are expected to further review the proposal as part of broader discussions on future civic investments and downtown revitalization.
