Wasdale Emerald Pool Named UK’s Top Hidden Gem in New Tourism Study

by Evelyn

A newly released study has identified the UK’s top hidden gem destinations, offering travelers an alternative to the country’s traditional tourist hotspots. The research, commissioned by financial technology company SumUp, assessed attractions based on review counts, visitor traffic, and accessibility via public transport.

Topping the list is the Wasdale Emerald Pool in Cumbria, praised for its striking green hue and tranquil cascades. Often referred to as the “Fairy Pool,” the secluded spot is formed by a series of small waterfalls, making it a favorite among nature lovers seeking serene scenery away from crowded destinations.

Following closely is the Birmingham Back to Backs, a collection of preserved 19th-century working-class homes now operated by the National Trust. Built around a shared courtyard and inhabited from the 1840s through the 1970s, the site offers guided tours that immerse visitors in the everyday lives of past residents. Advance booking is required for access.

In third place is Freshwater West Beach in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Known primarily among the surfing community, the beach remains relatively under-the-radar, with just 234 Tripadvisor reviews despite its rugged beauty and expansive shoreline.

Tulleys Farm in Crawley, West Sussex, ranks fourth. The working family farm features seasonal attractions such as a pumpkin patch, Christmas light displays, and interactive escape rooms, offering year-round activities for visitors of all ages.

Little Moreton Hall in Cheshire completes the top five. This National Trust-owned Tudor manor is noted for its distinctive, slightly distorted timber-framed architecture. Surrounded by a scenic moat, the building has stood for over 500 years and continues to captivate visitors with its historical quirks.

Other entries in the top ten include Bletchley Park in Milton Keynes, the Royal Yacht Britannia in Edinburgh, and Samlesbury Hall in Lancashire.

Corin Camenisch, Marketing and Growth Leader at SumUp, explained the aim behind the ranking: “We created this list to spotlight some of the UK’s hidden gems, places that are often overlooked in favor of the usual tourist spots like the London Eye or Buckingham Palace. These underrated destinations rely heavily on tourism, and by highlighting them, we hope to support local businesses and encourage sustainable visitor growth.”

The study underscores a growing interest among UK travelers in discovering off-the-beaten-path attractions that combine cultural value with authentic local experiences.
