Walt Disney World is moving forward with the phased closure of DinoLand U.S.A. in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, as it prepares to transform the area into a new land inspired by the “Tropical Americas,” featuring themes from Indiana Jones and Encanto.
The Boneyard, a dinosaur-themed play area designed for young children, will be the next attraction to close permanently. Disney has confirmed that the last day for guests to experience The Boneyard will be September 1, 2025. It will officially close on September 2, marking an earlier-than-expected shutdown.
The Boneyard has long been a popular stop for families, offering interactive experiences such as slides, rope bridges, and fossil excavation activities in a dig site setting. Its closure follows the permanent shutdown of other DinoLand U.S.A. fixtures, including TriceraTop Spin, Fossil Fun Games, and Chester & Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures, which closed in January 2025.
Initially, Disney stated that The Boneyard, along with the DINOSAUR attraction and Restaurantosaurus, would remain open throughout the remainder of 2025. However, plans have since changed for The Boneyard. DINOSAUR and Restaurantosaurus are still expected to operate through the end of the year, though specific closure dates for 2026 have yet to be announced.
According to entertainment journalist Scott Gustin, Disney has confirmed that the upcoming Tropical Americas land will include a new play area for children, replacing The Boneyard’s role in offering family-friendly activities.
The complete transformation of DinoLand U.S.A. into Tropical Americas is slated for completion in 2027. The project marks one of the most significant thematic overhauls at Animal Kingdom in recent years.
