Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu: The Tamil Nadu government has initiated granite flooring and restoration works at the ancient Thanumalai Swamy Temple in Suchindram, with a total allocation of ₹1.29 crore earmarked for the project.
Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Minister P. K. Sekar Babu inaugurated the granite flooring work on Sunday, underscoring the state’s commitment to preserving the centuries-old temple, which holds significance for both Shaivite and Vaishnavite devotees.
Speaking to the media, the minister detailed the scope of the renovation. The HR&CE Department is undertaking the tile-laying project in the temple’s main hall at a cost of ₹58 lakh. Additionally, ₹14 lakh—raised through sponsorship—has been dedicated to the renovation of the temple tower. Another ₹45 lakh has been allocated for general maintenance, including cleaning of the temple’s rock structures.
Dating back over 1,000 years, the Thanumalai Swamy Temple stands as one of the region’s oldest religious sites. Spanning more than two acres, the temple features dual entrances and intricate architectural elements that are being preserved as part of the restoration.
Minister Sekar Babu was joined during the visit by HR&CE Commissioner P. N. Sridhar and Kanyakumari District Collector R. Alagumeena.
