While the nation boasts hundreds of parks, many prefer choosing destinations closer to home for convenience and local flavor.
The largest amusement park in the U.S. is Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. Covering an expansive 12,000 hectares—comparable in size to the metropolitan areas of Barcelona or San Francisco—Walt Disney World includes renowned parks such as Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom. Its proximity to Orlando International Airport and Miami makes it a top global destination.
In a recent assessment, the organization Let’s Roam compiled a list highlighting the best amusement park in each state. With roughly 475 amusement parks nationwide, the list aims to guide visitors toward notable destinations that offer everything from record-breaking coasters to regional favorites and refreshing water parks.
In North Carolina, Carowinds received top honors. Located on the state border with South Carolina, Carowinds spans over 400 acres and features Carolina Harbor, the largest water park in the Carolinas. The park is celebrated for its thrilling rides, including the Intimidator and Afterburn roller coasters, which rank among the South’s most intense attractions.
Visitors can also enjoy regional barbecue specialties from both North and South Carolina. Carowinds operates throughout the summer and remains open on weekends during spring and fall, making it a year-round option for amusement seekers in the region.
