Disney World has announced the permanent closure of several beloved attractions, including Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat, effective July 7. The move has sparked disappointment among fans who view these attractions as central to the park’s historic charm.
According to Disney Parks Blog, the closures are part of a plan to introduce a new themed land called Piston Peak National Park, inspired by Pixar’s hit film “Cars.” This new area will feature a wilderness setting reminiscent of the Rocky Mountain region, complete with towering trees, snowcapped peaks, waterfalls, rivers, and geysers.
Piston Peak is designed to evoke the spirit of America’s national parks and frontier history while integrating the playful world of “Cars.” The park’s creative team is employing a style known as “Parkitecture,” a design approach developed by the National Park Service to ensure buildings harmonize naturally with their environments. Guests will be able to explore the visitor lodge, Ranger HQ, trails, and other immersive elements within the new land.
The announcement has drawn a mix of reactions online. Some express sadness and frustration, seeing the closures as a loss of a key part of Disney World’s identity and a departure from Walt Disney’s legacy. Others urge patience, preferring to reserve judgment until the new developments are unveiled.
In addition to Piston Peak, Disney Parks Blog revealed plans to reopen Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and debut a new section inspired by Disney villains, marking a first for the park.
This expansion reflects Disney’s ongoing effort to refresh its attractions while blending nostalgia with innovative storytelling.
