GRAND CANYON, Ariz. — A transformer malfunction near the Grand Canyon Lodge has been identified as the source of a power outage that has disrupted services at the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park since the evening of Sunday, June 1, according to the National Park Service (NPS).
The outage, which began around 7 p.m., led to the cancellation of overnight reservations at the lodge starting June 2. The NPS is working in coordination with the park’s concessioner to restore full operations, including lodging and food services. Officials have expressed appreciation for visitors’ patience during the ongoing restoration efforts.
Despite adverse weather conditions—including heavy rain and lightning—NPS crews have made progress in restoring electricity to several key facilities. Power has been gradually reinstated to the General Store, fuel station, campground showers and laundry, North Rim Campground, employee housing, and administrative buildings.
While the Grand Canyon Lodge remains without power, other North Rim services continue to operate. The NPS Campground and Backcountry Information Kiosk, Ranger Roost information desk, scenic viewpoints, and the North Kaibab Trail remain open to the public. Evening ranger programs have been temporarily relocated to the North Rim Campground.
In addition, the Grand Canyon Conservancy Store is expected to remain open during the outage.
