A remarkable matchstick model of Norwich Cathedral will be unveiled this Sunday as part of a special charity event in the historic Bishop’s Garden.
The meticulously crafted model, created by 28-year-old Matthew Shackshaft, will be on display when the Bishop of Norwich opens his private garden in support of Nansa, a Norfolk-based charity that assists individuals with special educational needs and disabilities, as well as their families and caregivers.
Shackshaft, who attends the Nansa adult centre in Norwich, dedicated five years and over 20,000 matchsticks to building the detailed replica of the iconic cathedral. His creation will be a key attraction during the open garden event, which also features live music, games, stalls, and refreshments.
The Bishop’s Garden, spanning four acres beside the cathedral, is the oldest private garden in Norwich and offers exclusive views of the cathedral’s northern façade — a perspective not visible from public vantage points. The grounds include flower-filled borders framed by sculpted yew, towering tropical plants, an orchard with a wildflower labyrinth, extensive lawns, scenic walks, and both a productive kitchen garden and a recently replanted herb garden.
The garden will be open from 1:00pm to 4:30pm (last entry at 4:00pm) on Sunday, June 15, aligning with Father’s Day. Entry is £5, with free admission for children and wheelchair users. Only assistance dogs are permitted. The Bishop’s Garden is located at Norwich, NR3 1SB.
Proceeds from the day will support Nansa’s work across the county. The garden will also open on subsequent dates to benefit other local charities:
- 22 June – Norfolk Churches Trust
- 6 July – National Garden Scheme
- 13 July – Leeway
- 20 July – Vision Norfolk
- 27 July – RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre
