United Artists of Mexico and Bendigo Exhibition Celebrates Frida Kahlo’s Legacy and Cultural Exchange

by Evelyn

A new Artists on View exhibition in Bendigo is set to offer a vibrant and thought-provoking exploration of contemporary Mexican art alongside creative responses from local artists.

Titled United Artists of Mexico and Bendigo (Artistas Unidos de México y Bendigo), the exhibition brings together an eclectic collection of works by contemporary Mexican artists and newly commissioned pieces by Central Victorian artists. The show reflects diverse styles and contrasting artistic approaches, anchored by the themes of identity, nationality, and cultural legacy.

The exhibition draws inspiration from the Bendigo Art Gallery’s major show, Frida Kahlo: In Her Own Image, and examines how modern Mexican artists continue to interpret Kahlo’s enduring influence. Participating artists from Mexico include Deniol Alva, Jose-Octavio Ortiz, Ulises Reséndiz, and Lizette Vieyra.

Exhibition curator Ivan Sun invited local artists to respond to the visual and thematic elements of the Mexican works, creating a unique cultural dialogue across borders. The Bendigo cohort features a mix of emerging and established names, including Bodes, Salena Cummins, Chris Duffy, Sharon Greenaway, Amanda Peluso, Sally Poltrock, Avery Montgomery Reid, Molly Rule, Aimé Sacrez, Ivan Sun, Claire Tennant, Kristine Von Hilderbrandt, and David Waters.

“This is a vibrant fusion of artistic expression that reflects the perspectives and concerns of contemporary Mexico,” said Sun. “The works span painting, photography, sculpture, video, fashion, and textile design—each contributing to a wider conversation about heritage, creativity, and connection.”

He added, “By pairing Mexican and local artists, we’re not only showcasing international talent but encouraging collaboration and cross-cultural enrichment.”

Julie Amos, Manager of Bendigo Venues & Events, described the exhibition as a dynamic complement to the gallery’s Frida Kahlo blockbuster.

“Frida Kahlo remains one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century,” she said. “This exhibition reflects her vibrancy and complexity while offering fresh interpretations through the lens of contemporary creators. It’s a wonderful blend of global and local perspectives.”

United Artists of Mexico and Bendigo is free to the public and will be on display daily from June 12 to June 23, from 11am to 6pm at Dudley House, 60 View Street, Bendigo.

An official launch event will take place on Saturday, June 14, from 1pm to 3pm, featuring a traditional Huipils display representing various Mexican regions, live dance and fashion performances by the Mexbourne Dance Troupe, music by mariachi singer Sergio Garcia, a piñata smashing activity, a runway show curated by local designer Kristine Von Hilderbrandt, and traditional food provided by Tlatoani Australia.

The exhibition is presented as part of the City of Greater Bendigo’s Artists on View program and is included in Fiesta Bendigo, a destination marketing initiative designed to complement the Frida Kahlo exhibition and attract visitors to the region with rich cultural experiences.
