Universal Orlando Resort’s highly anticipated addition, Epic Universe, is raising the bar for immersive entertainment, offering a revolutionary take on theme park design. Opening May 22, the park features five intricately themed worlds, each accessed through ornate portals and designed to provide guests with an all-day experience.
According to Steve Tatham, executive creative director for Epic Universe, the new park departs from the traditional model of short, standalone rides. “Each one of these worlds can be a full-day experience,” Tatham told USA TODAY. “It’s transforming the nature of theme park design itself.”
While Epic Universe offers 11 rides, its appeal extends far beyond attractions. Character encounters, live shows, and interactive elements are woven throughout the park. One standout is The Untrainable Dragon in the How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk area. In Dark Universe, guests can meet characters like the Bride of Frankenstein and Ygor, adding further depth to the experience.
Tatham likens visitors to “waders, swimmers, and divers,” explaining that those who explore deeply will uncover hidden details and Easter eggs designed to reward curious fans.
Heat and Weather Preparedness Essential for Comfort
Though many ride queues are shaded or indoors, guests will encounter significant open-air spaces throughout the park. To prevent heat-related issues, visitors are encouraged to stay hydrated—free water is available at all drink stations and ride queues—and to use sun protection such as hats, sunscreen, cooling towels, and parasols. Guests are advised to seek shade in air-conditioned restaurants or shows and to consult a team member or visit one of the two first aid stations if they begin to feel ill.
Weather can be unpredictable, and rain is also a factor. Guests should bring reusable ponchos and wear waterproof footwear. Ride closures due to inclement weather are for safety and cannot be controlled by park staff.
Height Restrictions Could Affect Ride Access
Planning ahead can prevent disappointment, particularly for families with younger children. Three of the park’s rides—Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, Stardust Racers, and Dragon Racer’s Rally—require riders to be at least 48 inches tall. Most other rides require a minimum height of 40 inches, with Yoshi’s Adventure requiring 34 inches.
Certain attractions, such as Constellation Carousel and Fyre Drill, prohibit infants entirely. Parents can make use of family waiting areas to switch off with children who cannot or do not want to ride. Younger guests can also enjoy dedicated play zones like Viking Training Camp and the Astronomica splash pad.
Interactive features in Super Nintendo World and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic also provide entertainment for all ages. However, a Power-Up Band or interactive wand is necessary for participation in many of these experiences.
Accessibility in Super Nintendo World
Staircases are prominent in Super Nintendo World, especially within the Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge attraction. This has presented challenges for some guests, but multiple elevators throughout the two-story area ensure accessibility. Elevators are available from the moment guests enter the world, with themed pathways providing alternatives to escalators and stairs.
Guests requiring assistance can request team member guidance to access elevators inside ride queues. While this does not provide expedited access, it offers stair-free navigation. Additional elevators are located near Yoshi’s Adventure and Donkey Kong Country, ensuring all areas are accessible to guests with mobility needs.
Conclusion
Epic Universe represents a major evolution in theme park design, combining storytelling, immersion, and interactive technology across expansive themed lands. Visitors who prepare for weather, plan ride access, and explore beyond the headline attractions are poised to get the most out of this groundbreaking destination.
