Fort Wayne Invests $1.2 Million to Enhance Accessibility at Six City Playgrounds

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The city of Fort Wayne has committed $1.2 million to upgrade six playgrounds throughout the city, installing new equipment designed to be accessible for children of all ages and abilities.

The renovations were carried out at Lakeside Park, Franke Park, Jehl Park, Waynedale Park, Indian Village Park, and McCormick Park. City officials recently convened at Lakeside Park to officially unveil the improved facilities, highlighting their role as safe and engaging spaces for children to play and for parents to relax.

Local children enjoying the new features at Lakeside Park described their experiences with enthusiasm. “We just went on the climbing thing with the red ropes and it was fun because you get to hop across different parts, then there’s a balance beam and you climb up the ropes,” said Noel and Owen Franke.

Funding for the project was provided through a local income tax supplemental distribution from the State of Indiana.

Steve McDaniel, director of Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation, emphasized the community-focused purpose of the investment. “The kids are out here in the parks, and that’s what parks are here for,” McDaniel said, reflecting on the sight of children actively enjoying the new playgrounds.

Mayor Tom Henry underscored the city’s commitment to strengthening neighborhood resources, particularly the park system. “One of the neighborhood jewels that we want to make sure we’re building up are our park systems,” he said. “Providing the opportunity to invest in new park equipment is a tremendous benefit and helps us go a long way in improving the quality of lives for our residents.”

While most playgrounds have already reopened, Indian Village Park and McCormick Park are the final two to receive upgrades and are expected to be completed later this month.
