WATFORD CITY, N.D. (KXNET) — A new urban park is set to transform Watford City’s Main Street into a vibrant hub for community gatherings, events, and celebrations.
The project, inspired by the results of a 2024 Community Survey and Downtown Redevelopment Plan, aims to address the growing public demand for a shared downtown space. More than 800 residents participated in the survey, with a strong majority expressing support for a central urban park along North Main Street.
In response, the Watford City government and its Roughrider Fund Committee began acquiring property in late 2024. The Roughrider Fund, financed by a 1.5-cent city sales tax established in 1998, supports community and economic development initiatives. Up to $1.5 million has been earmarked from the fund to purchase seven lots on Main Street—four designated for the park and three intended for future mixed-use development.
The proposed park, estimated to cost between $2.5 million and $3.5 million, will feature a stage with a built-in sound system, public art installations, and concession facilities. It will be situated between Door 204 and The Choice Building, creating a central space for performances, community events, and cultural activities.
A capital campaign led by local stakeholders is scheduled to launch in 2026 to support the remaining construction costs. Construction is expected to span from 2027 to 2028, with a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony slated for June 2029.
