Eight new self-service sports equipment lockers have been installed across Galway City as part of an initiative aimed at promoting physical activity and healthy living. The ‘Box Up’ units, launched this week by Galway City Council in partnership with Galway Sports Partnership, are now operational in eight city parks and recreational areas.
The lockers—solar-powered and free to use—are stocked with a wide range of sports equipment, including footballs, tennis rackets, dumbbells, resistance bands, frisbees, rugby balls, and hurls. Registered users can borrow the items for up to three hours without charge. Access is managed via the free BoxUp mobile app, which requires only a valid ID for registration, with no credit card details needed.
The units are located at the following sites: Doughiska, Ballybane (Castlepark Pitch), O’Sullivan Park, Renmore (Community Centre), South Park, McGraths Field, Salthill, and Westside. Equipment availability varies by location, depending on the surrounding amenities and park features.
The initiative is part of the national Active Cities project, supported by the Community Recognition Fund under the Department of Rural and Community Development, with local implementation overseen by Galway City Council and the Local Community Development Committee.
Previously implemented in Cork, Dublin, Limerick, and Waterford, the Box Up project has been credited with increasing community engagement in sports and outdoor activity. Galway’s rollout is intended to expand access to physical activity for people of all ages and abilities.
Commenting on the launch, Mayor of Galway City, Councillor Peter Keane, said:
“The BoxUp initiative is a fantastic addition to the recreational areas of the city. It is great to see this project from Active Cities Galway and Galway City Council supporting the people of the city to enjoy physical activity. Having these in place for eight areas across the city will make being active more accessible for all.”
