The Walt Disney Company marked Memorial Day with a series of commemorations and community engagement initiatives, continuing its long-standing tradition of honoring U.S. military service members, veterans, and their families. Across its parks and resorts, Disney paid tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice, while reinforcing its enduring commitment to the military community through service projects, special events, and partnerships with veteran-focused organizations.
Commemorating the Fallen with “Missing Hero” Tables
In solemn remembrance of America’s fallen service members and those missing in action, Disney displayed “Missing Hero” tables at the Disneyland Resort in California, Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, and Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa in Hawai‘i. These symbolic displays—featuring elements such as a lemon slice to signify bitter loss, a pinch of salt representing tears shed, an inverted glass denoting absence, and an empty chair—served as a visual reminder of the high cost of freedom.
“The Missing Hero Tables are a powerful symbol meant to prompt reflection and appreciation for the freedoms made possible by these sacrifices,” said Nick Filippone, Disneyland Resort main entrance operations manager and U.S. Navy veteran.
Celebrating Military Service During Fleet Week
As part of Los Angeles Fleet Week 2025, Disneyland Resort welcomed 100 Marines and Sailors for a celebratory day at the park. The visit coincided with the resort’s 70th anniversary and included immersive experiences such as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Mickey’s Toontown, the “Paint the Night” parade, and the “Wondrous Journeys” nighttime spectacular.
A highlight of the day was a flag retreat ceremony in Town Square, featuring the Disneyland Band, The Dapper Dans, and Rear Admiral Richard W. Meyer, Deputy Commander of the U.S. Third Fleet, U.S. Navy, as a guest of honor.
“Disneyland’s commitment to honoring veterans is visible throughout the park,” said Ariel Elias, Disneyland Resort manager of Supplier Diversity and a retired Marine Corps Warrant Officer. “Whether it’s Veterans Day, Fleet Week, or the daily flag retreat, the respect for service is ever-present.”
VoluntEARS Assemble Care Kits and Spread Magic
During National Military Appreciation Month, Disney cast members participated in charitable efforts supporting active-duty troops and their families. Through the Disney VoluntEARS program, which has logged over 13 million volunteer hours since 1983, cast members assembled 2,000 care packages at Walt Disney World for deployed troops. Each kit included toiletries, personal notes of encouragement, and Disney-themed items.
In Glendale, California, VoluntEARS partnered with Blue Star Families to create welcome kits for military families transitioning due to Permanent Change of Station (PCS) orders. These packages aim to ease the stress of relocation and provide comfort during a time of change.
Meanwhile, cast members at Aulani collaborated with Blue Star Families at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam to host a family event featuring crafts, storytelling, and a surprise appearance by Stitch. Each child received a Mickey Mouse plush and a selection of Disney books.
“Aulani was honored to support our Blue Star Families ‘ohana and bring a bit of Disney magic to military families through the power of mo‘olelo, or storytelling,” said Dylan Rogers, Aulani Ambassador.
Ongoing Support Through Partnerships and Programs
In addition to its seasonal initiatives, Disney maintains long-term partnerships with military-serving organizations such as the United Service Organizations (USO), Fisher House Foundation, and Student Veterans of America. This year, nearly 100 Fisher Houses across the U.S. received Disney-themed care packages for military families staying near loved ones undergoing treatment at VA hospitals or military medical centers.
Since launching the “Heroes Work Here” initiative in 2012, Disney has helped thousands of veterans secure employment within the company. Today, the program remains a cornerstone of Disney’s military hiring and professional development efforts.
The company also continues to support veteran recognition through cultural exhibits, including the display of former President George W. Bush’s Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors at EPCOT in partnership with the Bush Institute.
A Legacy Rooted in Service
Disney’s military appreciation has deep historical roots. Founders Walt and Roy O. Disney both served during World War I, and since then, the company has maintained a legacy of supporting the U.S. Armed Forces through morale-boosting content, employment opportunities, and patriotic park traditions such as daily flag retreat ceremonies.
As Memorial Day reminds the nation to honor those who gave all, The Walt Disney Company reaffirms its pledge to stand beside service members and their families—not only during national holidays but throughout the year.
