The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) has unveiled plans to create a national park on the country’s islands, a strategic move aimed at preserving biodiversity and advancing sustainable development. This initiative underscores Rwanda’s strong commitment to environmental conservation, eco-tourism, and inclusive economic growth.
The islands, located mainly across Lake Kivu and other inland lakes, host unique ecosystems featuring rare bird species, endemic plants, and diverse aquatic life. By designating these areas as protected national parks, RDB aims to safeguard these fragile environments for future generations while fostering eco-friendly tourism opportunities.
Beyond environmental protection, the new park is expected to stimulate economic growth by generating employment in tourism, hospitality, transportation, and conservation sectors.
